Rabbits

Rabbits are susceptible to a variety of diseases and conditions, including overgrown teeth, hairballs, parasites, and cancer. They also tend to be really good at hiding signs of illness or pain.

Contact us if your rabbit:

  • Has discharge from the eyes or nose, runny stool, or a gurgling stomach
  • Has an elevated or low temperature
  • Begins drooling, scratching at the ears, or sneezing
  • Starts tilting his or her head
  • Develops bald patches
  • Stops eating, appears quieter than normal, or exhibits other abnormal behaviour

In addition, rabbits can also benefit from regular dental checkups. At Huron East Animal Hospital, we can help make sure problems with your rabbit’s teeth don’t develop into serious, potentially life-threatening conditions.

We also strongly recommend that you have your rabbit spayed or neutered. Not only do rabbits have the potential to give birth once every month, but they can also have up to 14 babies at a time! Even in households with a single rabbit, spaying or neutering has benefits. For instance, it can protect your rabbit against several types of cancer and reduce or eliminate aggression, as well as other undesirable behaviour, such as spraying, mounting, destructive chewing, and biting. And don’t worry – spaying or neutering will not change your rabbit’s personality!

If you have any questions about how to care for your pet rabbit, give us a call! We can discuss diet, housing, grooming, and even litterbox training.

I brought my rabbit Wanda to Huron East Animal Hospital for an emergency situation. All the staff were friendly, helpful and concerned about Wanda's situation. They were able to book Wanda in quickly for an emergency appointment.Wanda was treated with the utmost care and expertise you could hope... for. They asked many questions, examined Wanda and came up with a treatment plan, giving me options and pricing, so there was no surprise at the end. The prices for this emergency situation were very reasonable.Dr. Johnson answered all my questions and quelled my concerns, with genuine care for Wanda's health and professional advise. Dr. Johnson even drew me a detailed diagram to help explain the situation. Beyond me being put at ease by the entire staff at Huron East Animal Hospital, Wanda was completely calm while being handled the staff and Dr. Johnson. I think Wanda enjoyed her trip to the vet! The clinic even called me a couple of days later to check and see if Wanda's health was improving, which I thought was such a professional courtesy.I really couldn't have asked for more while going through a rough situation with Wanda. If you are looking for a great team to help your pet with ongoing and emergency care, then Huron East Animal Hospital should be your first stop.read more
