Does My Rabbit Need Spaying or Neutering?

It’s normal to question whether our bunny spay and neuter services are right for your beloved companion. That’s why our knowledgeable and communicative veterinary staff is here to break down what our services entail and answer any questions you may have about them. You can breathe easy knowing that we’ll give you all the information you need to confidently decide whether you want to proceed with either procedure, including explaining their benefits.

Spaying, also called ovariohysterectomy, refers to the surgical removal of a female rabbit’s ovaries and uterus. By removing your female pet’s reproductive organs, you significantly reduce their chances of developing ovarian or uterine cancer. Spaying can also curb unwanted behavior typically associated with heat cycles. Neutering, also called castration, is the surgical process of removing your male rabbit’s testicles. Like spaying, neutering can eliminate your pet’s chances of developing certain cancers, like testicular cancer.

What to Expect During Your Pet’s Appointment

When you bring your pet in for their initial appointment, our Kitchener rabbit veterinarian will start by conducting a wellness exam. They’ll carefully examine your pet and determine if they’re an ideal candidate for the procedure. For example, chronic conditions like heart disease can make spaying or neutering dangerous. Once our veterinarian has given your pet the green light, we’ll schedule your bunny’s surgery two weeks out.

On the day of your pet’s surgery, we’ll have you drop them off at a specified time. Once the procedure is complete, we’ll initially monitor their condition and then contact you to pick them up. We’ll give detailed post-operative care instructions that take into consideration the unique biology and behaviour of rabbits. We may recommend that you purchase your bunny a surgery vest, which helps prevent them from aggravating their surgical incision.

Rabbit Spay & Neuter FAQs

At Huron East Animal Hospital, we never want you to feel like you can’t approach our team with questions and concerns about our services. That’s why we’re here to answer any questions you may have. Some of the most frequently asked questions about our Kitchener rabbit spaying and neutering services include:

Will you provide me with pain medication for my pet?

Yes. However, it’s important to note that we also offer additional pain medication for a fee if your pet is struggling with pain.

What should I do if my rabbit has stopped pooping after surgery?

Gut motility is one of the greatest concerns for rabbits after spaying or neutering, as pain from their procedure can begin to impact it. We recommend that you contact our office as soon as possible so that we can help manage their pain and get their gut motility back on track.

How long will it take for my pet to recover?

Depending on the complexity of your pet’s procedure, it can take anywhere from 7-10 days for your rabbit to fully recover. Our team will check in with you to gauge how your pet is recovering and address any concerns you may have.

How old does my rabbit need to be for either procedure?

Our veterinary practice recommends that female rabbits be between 4 to 6 months of age. For male rabbits, however, we recommend they be between 3 to 6 months old.
