Senior Pet Wellness

As dogs and cats get older, they require extra attention and special care. Regular veterinary exams can help your senior pet live a longer, healthier, and more comfortable life! The senior wellness program at Huron East Animal Hospital can help your pet remain fit and healthy throughout the golden years. It can also help us catch any potential health concerns earlier, when they’re easier to treat or manage.

Early diagnosis of diseases and certain conditions is important throughout a pet’s life, but it becomes even more critical when your dog or cat enters the senior years. That’s because the risks of arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hormone disorders, and kidney and liver problems all increase with age. In addition, older dogs and cats may not show any signs of even serious diseases until they are advanced.

Senior status varies depending on your pet’s breed and size. Smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger dogs, and cats generally live longer than dogs. The experienced team at Huron East Animal Hospital can help determine what life stage your pet is in.

Before your dog or cat reaches senior status, we recommend that you bring them in for a baseline exam and diagnostic workup. This will provide us with a record of what’s normal for your pet so we can keep track of any changes. In most cases, we suggest this checkup occur at age 7 for dogs and 8 for cats.

At Huron West Animal Hospital, we can treat many symptoms that are commonly attributed to age, including those associated with cognitive dysfunction syndrome (similar to Alzheimer’s in humans). We can also improve your pet’s quality of life by identifying, preventing, and/or reducing pain, recommending a nutrition and exercise plan, and suggesting certain lifestyle and environmental modifications.

As always, we will tailor your pet’s senior wellness plan to his or her individual needs. If you have any questions, give us a call so we can discuss our senior wellness program in more detail.

I brought my rabbit Wanda to Huron East Animal Hospital for an emergency situation. All the staff were friendly, helpful and concerned about Wanda's situation. They were able to book Wanda in quickly for an emergency appointment.Wanda was treated with the utmost care and expertise you could hope... for. They asked many questions, examined Wanda and came up with a treatment plan, giving me options and pricing, so there was no surprise at the end. The prices for this emergency situation were very reasonable.Dr. Johnson answered all my questions and quelled my concerns, with genuine care for Wanda's health and professional advise. Dr. Johnson even drew me a detailed diagram to help explain the situation. Beyond me being put at ease by the entire staff at Huron East Animal Hospital, Wanda was completely calm while being handled the staff and Dr. Johnson. I think Wanda enjoyed her trip to the vet! The clinic even called me a couple of days later to check and see if Wanda's health was improving, which I thought was such a professional courtesy.I really couldn't have asked for more while going through a rough situation with Wanda. If you are looking for a great team to help your pet with ongoing and emergency care, then Huron East Animal Hospital should be your first stop.read more
