The puppy wellness program at Huron East Animal Hospital is designed to help get your newest family member started on the right path to a long, healthy and happy life. The first few months of life are a critical period in your puppy’s development, and our team is here to provide the support and services necessary to help him or her grow into a well-mannered, healthy adult dog. This includes information and advice on nutrition, training, behaviour, and socialization.
At Huron East Animal Hospital, we recommend scheduling your puppy for that first exam as soon as possible. Until your puppy has received the initial series of vaccines, he or she is susceptible to many serious but preventable health conditions. We will vaccinate your new dog against rabies, distemper, and parvovirus, among other diseases.
Your puppy will also need to be tested and treated for parasites, which are common in younger dogs. For instance, most puppies have roundworms, which are intestinal worms that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal signs (although puppies can often have worms without showing any symptoms).
It’s important for puppies to be treated for roundworms, not only to rid them of the infection but also to prevent your human family from becoming infected. That’s because roundworms are a zoonotic parasite, which means they can be transmitted from pets to people. By ensuring that your puppy is properly treated, you can keep your entire family safe from these and other parasites.
