Bringing your adult dog or cat in for an annual diagnostic and wellness checkup can help reassure you that he or she is healthy and also help us detect the presence of hidden diseases or conditions. Early detection can dramatically improve the prognosis of many health conditions, keep medical costs down, and help your pet live a longer, happier life. Animals are naturally adept at hiding signs that something is wrong, so subtle changes in their health or behaviour might be easy to overlook. Furthermore, depending on the condition, some pets don’t show any symptoms at all.
Dogs and cats age more rapidly than humans, so it is even more critical for our animal companions to receive regular exams and health screenings. In addition, the risks of certain age-related conditions, such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hormone disorders, and kidney and liver problems all increase as your pet gets older.
During your pet’s wellness exam, we will perform a comprehensive physical assessment, checking your dog or cat from nose to tail. We will also make sure your pet receives appropriate vaccinations and preventives. We will perform a diagnostic workup, which may include blood, fecal, and urine tests to check for parasites and underlying diseases. We may also recommend that your pet undergo a dental exam and/or cleaning.
When your pet is approaching his or her senior years, we will recommend a baseline exam and diagnostic workup to establish what’s normal for your pet. This will enable us to keep track of any changes so they can be addressed in the most timely and effective manner.
In between wellness visits, please don’t hesitate to alert us of any physical or behavioural changes you may have noticed in your pet, as well as any other concerns you might have.
